Tips for Mom: Taking Time for Number One

Tuesday, January 19, 2010

Being a mom (or a dad) means that you are a really, really busy person.

From the minute the alarm (be it a beep from the iPhone or the wail of "ALL DONE!!!" through the monitor) sounds to the second your eyes close at night, with visions of menu plans and to-do lists dancing in your head, you are on the go.

It's a fact.

The problem is that we, lost in the whirlwind of our schedules and caretaking of everyone around us, completely neglect Number One.

Ourselves.

What I'm going to tell you right now is going to be shocking. You're going to gasp. "But I don't have time!" you'll protest, aghast. "There aren't enough hours in a day!"

I know. Really, I do. But it doesn't matter.

You absolutely, 100%, m-u-s-t set aside some of those elusive minutes for one person. You.

The easy part of this challenge, is that it's flexible. It can be a few hours a week, lingering over a latte at the bookstore or coffee shop. It can be a weekly at-home manicure or pedicure.

It can be a nightly bubble bath with candles and a Michael Buble CD, or a few chapters of a good book enjoyed with a cup of tea before bed.

My personal favorite is a glass of pinot with some really, really, REALLY good chocolate.

The benefits are countless. Consider it a little Mommy (or Daddy) Time Out. It will refresh you and energize you (Not all at once, of course. Nothing worth having is immediate). It will help give you the patience for the daily grind. It will be the treat to which you look forward at the end of the day or week.

You deserve it.

Promise yourself you will do this. And I promise you that it will change your life.

Leave a comment and let us know how you spend your "Mommy Time Out." We'd love to hear!
