Activity: Busy Busy BumbleBee

I decided to keep the B theme alive this week (one letter a week seems reasonable, no?) and took on this Busy Busy BumbleBee project.
You'll need: some kind of Crispix/honeycomb type cereal, craft glue, cardstock (I used yellow for the beehive and white for the mounting sheet), chenille stems (2 black, 2 yellow), scissors and a sharpie.
First, I folded the yellow card stock in half and drew in the side of a beehive with my sharpie.
Then I cut it out, unfolded it, finished outlining with the marker and cut out the "door" to the hive.
I went to work making the bees. I twisted one black chenille stem around two yellow ones.
When I ran out of black, I went to a second one to continue until I got something like this.
Then I cut the black & yellow twist into ten 1"(ish) pieces. I folded each piece in half and VOILA: bumblebee.
And then I set aside the extra black chenille half-stem for later.
Oh I'm bringing home a baby bumblebee...
When Turtle was ready, he helped me glue the hive to the background cardstock.
And then it was time to start gluing the crispix to the hive. While we did this, I talked about how bees bring pollen to their hives and use it to make honey. It was kind of spur of the moment, but it seemed to work.
He was very interested. In eating the cereal.
And in gluing. He loves glue.
Once the cereal was in place, it was time to start gluing down the bumblebees. We counted them before we began and then we counted as we put each one in place.
The hive, all abuzz with bees.
Trying to see if I'll notice if he steals another piece of cereal.
Just one last bite (it didn't have glue on it. Promise).
When we were done, I punched a hole in the top of the hive and threaded the leftover chenille stem through into a hanger. I then numbered the other bumblebees, counting aloud with Turtle as I did so.
Finally, I titled the project "Busy Busy BumbleBee" and added it to his shelf for later.
