Activity: C is for Clock
Thursday, January 14, 2010
For this project, you'll need some a piece of cardstock, two pieces of colored foam (adhesive-backed is best), glue, scissors, buttons, a sharpie and a paper fastener. I thought I would use chenille stems, but came up with a better idea halfway through.
On the back of the foam sheets, use a sharpie to draw circles. On one, freehand a "C." Although it doesn't matter in this case, remember that you will have to draw some letters backwards, so it will be correct when you turn it over.
Cut out the shapes.
Cut two small strips of different lengths from the leftover foam. These will be your clockhands (the longest one should be less than the radius of your solid circle.
Pierce a hole in the bottom of the two strips and in the center of your solid circle. You can use a nail, a straight pin, or, as I did, a tiny Philips-head screwdriver.
Poke your paper fastener through the two strips (you'll want the head of the fastener to be closest to the shorter strip...
And then poke it through the hole in the circle. Turtle helped with this part.
We peeled the paper backing off the circle, I flattened the fastener prongs...
And Turtle helped me stick it in place on a piece of cardstock. We also stuck down the "C." Next, we glued down 4 buttons, at the 12, 3, 6 and 9 positions.
Waiting for the buttons to dry.
I used the sharpie to fill in the numbers and "is for Clock" and now we have a great tool for counting and learning to tell time. We're still a ways off from time telling, but Turtle loves the addition of 11 and 12 to his numbers, and even throws in a 13 from time to time.
