Beach Day

Saturday, February 28, 2009

We managed to keep busy all day.

Oh, hai.

I'm in ur office.

Eating ur desk.

Finished! The stencil job I started yesterday. Now, I can't wait to get those shelves in and the trim painted.

The general effect of what it will look like with books.

After Turtle's nap, we headed to Vilano Beach for the rest of the afternoon. It was a gorgeous afternoon and the weather was perfect.

Happy Friday!

Friday, February 27, 2009

I've slacked a bit, again, this week. Between Gymboree and story time and play dates, and outings, my social calendar has been quite full.

In addition, I'm starting to volunteer for Diamonds in the Rough Farm, a retired horse farm in my area (the one I visited the other day). Shockingly and conveniently, they need some help which happens to be exactly my skill set. Crazy, huh? So since I have some extra time in my days, I figured why not? I love horses and it's a good and worthy cause. Wish me lots of luck. :)

Anyway, on to the main event!

Today in 2/28. Turtle will become 10 months old somewhere between today and tomorrow, seeing as how we were cheated out of the 29th this month. In two months, he will be a whole year! Good grief, where has the time gone?

As you can see by the way he is manhandling this tub book from his Auntie L, Turtle is still teething horribly, but has no teeth to show for it.

He is starting to make weird faces at me when I point the camera in his general direction. Kind of like, Mom, we went through this. I've smiled a million times. I'm over it. Be gone.

Needless to say, I'm not listening.

He's been doing great with his walker. He has mastered going forwards now, and actually has a purpose in his travels. He zooms all over the living room and kitchen, sometimes taking a swing by the laundry room and once actually maneuvering down the little hallway to Daddy's office.

This morning, he was was pointing and laughing at Bentley, who was kind of pissed at being put outside.

The walker also allows him to explore fun things, like the cabinets. Good news is, because of the way the walker is designed, he can't actually open any doors or drawers. Yet. He can, however, reach the buttons on the TV. We have started using "No" and redirection, quite often.

And we have a wall!

Here's the living room side. J will be back next week to touch up the trim, but aside from my stencilling work, this side is complete. Woot.

Here's the office side, complete with a close up of the start of my work. J has to paint the trim, and drill the holes for the shelves, but he'll get to that. In the meantime, I am free to play and have my way with it. I love how it looks. It's just what we envisioned. Yay!

HORSIES!!!

Tuesday, February 24, 2009

What a great day.

S asked me to join her on a visit to DIAMONDS IN THE ROUGH FARM, a retired horse farm in our area. What an amazing experience.

From their website:

Founded in 2004, DRFarm is the Ancient City’s first animal welfare organization to address the area’s equine welfare issues. Devoted to providing a life long safe haven for retired equines, our commitments also include:

Rehabilitating animals in need · PMU foal/mare awareness, Providing educational information & materials concerning proper care and handling of horses in an effort to prevent neglect, abuse and abandonment in a rapidly increasing local horse population.

There are few alternatives for aging horses that have been long-time faithful servants to their humans, when the time comes for them to retire. DRF is one of only a handful of organizations nationwide that provides for horses in their final years.

Marie gave us the tour and then let us wander about the grounds for as long as we wanted.

J hangs out with the barn cats.

While Turtle wonders where we are THIS time.

Little J hangs out in his stroller, wondering what all the fuss is about.

And now for the main event. Horses!

Um, Mom? What is THAT???

Nice horsey.

Oh, hai!

Hai, again. You're pretty.

This big boy is one of my favorites. Look at his gorgeous coloring. DRFARM.ORG says of Honey:

Originally bred in Argentina for polo in the early 1990's, this Thoroughbred gelding was brought to the USA in 1999. He competed successfully on the ‘A’ rated Jumping circuit in Wellington, FL for three years before being abandoned in a field. The director of DRF, Marie Matte, cared for him through a bout with Lymes disease (that was originally falsely diagnosed as EPM - a degenerative neurological disease), hyperthyroidism and later a case of intestinal displacement over the spleen. He thankfully came through his maladies successfully and is maintained with a special diet and medicinal supplements. He has been sentinels for Tootsie, the PMU Mustang Paint, from the start.

The best part of my day is that I talked to Marie about volunteering a bit for the organization. I think it's a good fit for us both and it would be a great way to utilize my skills. I have a lot to offer, and hopefully can do some good for these beauties.

Hangin' Out

Just some shots of the last few days...

Turtle with his wooden puppy. Molly would like it to be known that she despises this wooden puppy.

Thanks to a recommendation from S, we gave the Nuby sippy cup a shot and I think we've got it down. He's still not a huge fan, but at least he gets the idea. Yummy.

We took him to our neighborhood park for a little ride on the bouncy whale.

Daddy, what is this???

WHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tomorrow we are going to a retired horse farm to visit the horses. It's going to be so much fun.

Also, I'd like to announce that Red Velvet Armadillo Bakeshop now has a Facebook Fan Page. If you're a member of Facebook, click here to become a fan and keep up with the latest creations from Red Velvet Armadillo Bakeshop! Thanks for your support!

Photo Session & Park

Saturday, February 21, 2009

And another Saturday is upon us.

Last night, I left Turtle with DH and headed off to the movies to see He's Just Not That Into You with some girlfriends. I was expecting not to like it, but as it turns out, I laughed through the entire thing. Loudly. I'm glad I got a little time out of the house.

Speaking of which... check it out! All our carefully selected floorplans have gone right out the window. We have officially begun the Official Closing of the Office. It's really weird to have a wall between the office and living room, but it's for the best. And, out of the ashes rises.... (drumroll please) a PROJECT!!!

I was planning on covering the back wall of the bookshelf (on the office side) with a black and white damask, an idea I fell in love with on the Rachel Ray show. However, I found these great wall stencils at Hobby Lobby and decided I can stencil my own damask pattern instead. Squeee! I will do the pattern in black on a white background, and then I am going to edge the front ends of the shelves with black grosgrain ribbon, held in place with upholstery tacks at regular intervals. Dramatic and pretty.

Which brings us to the living room side. I am going to use the same wall stencil over here. That drywall rectangle will be edged molding, and since it will be a smooth surface (unlike our annoying textured walls), I am going to have J finish it in white paint and then I will stencil with the color of the living room. The final touch will be to hang a large mirror or a collection of smaller mirrors, to bring some depth to the room.

We've had some gorgeous weather, so DH wanted to take Turtle to the park. Who am I to stand in the way of a boy and his daddy?

Wheeeeeee! I'm flying!!!!

Higher, Mommy, higher!

Swinging is hard work. I'm sleepy. Can I take a nap right here?

No, didn't I make myself clear? I'm tired. Wanna take a nap!

Oooh, this is fun (Please note the new shoes on DH. This has taken us months to accomplish and it's for the better).

And now I take a turn with mommy.

And finally, the pictures from our shoot with Kelly from KC Frick Photography
. We are so thrilled.

Happy Valentine's Day!

Saturday, February 14, 2009

And stuff. :)

Mom and Dad left this morning at 5am. They actually just called to say they had gotten back to NJ safe and sound. I miss the hell out of them. I wish they could have stayed another two weeks.

Yesterday, we took Turtle to the park. He has the best time, hanging out. It was great having so many extra pairs of hands to occupy him so I could get some great pics.

Here he is, swinging away.

And then, on to the slide. He was VERY annoyed that Nana and Papa Bear had to hold on to him and kept trying to pry their fingers off. Can you say "independent child"?

Nana was fearless and climbed up into one of the apparatus so Turtle could peek out the bubble window.

Hiyeeee!!!

And looky here. Someone is figuring out how to put one foot in front of the other. We call that walking. And someone gets it. Ack! Mobility!

After lunch, we headed to Vilano Beach. The weather turned and it was freezing and dark, but we still got some great pictures.

And then today was Valentine's Day. I made DH a heart-shaped egg and cheese sandwich. For dinner, he made me pineapple shrimp, coconut & basil thai rice and an asparagus/green bean/feta salad with a clam appetizer. I made cheesecake pops.

And here's Mr. Turtle with his awesome faux-hawk, enjoying his Valentine's gifts. Could he be any cuter? The answer is no.
