Home from our Babymoon!

Friday, April 25, 2008

As a surprise, I booked a nightlong romantic package at the Casa Monica (http://www.casamonica.com/) in downtown St. Augustine. I thought we needed a few days just to get away from it all and reconnect before the baby comes. It was the best idea ever.

We dropped off the pugs on Thursday morning and drove down to St. Augustine beach for lunch at Panama Hattie's, and of course, we had to drop in on Rita's for frozen custard. :)

We took a nice drive into downtown St. Augustine and checked into the Casa Monica. The concierge informed me that he had "good news and bad news." The bad news: there would be stairs. The good news? Due to a conference, they had to upgrade our room and so we would be staying in the honeymoon suite, complete with two floors, a private hot tub, and a private blacony all around the upper level. We tried to contain our ... um.... disappointment. ;)

There were a dozen gorgeous red roses waiting in the room, and within 20 minutes, champagne and chocolate covered strawberries were delivered to the room. We decided to enjoy the room and the view before our reservations at 95 Cordova. This is definitely going to be a restaurant we visit again. Everything was absolutely amazing. We split a fried green tomato with goat cheese appetizer, and the DH had their coconut crab bisque, the walnut & goat cheese crusted rack of lamb and creme brulee, while I had chilean sea bass with cilantro & balsamic reduction and the chocolate lava cake. Food, service and ambiance were all phenomenal.

It was late, so we went back up to the room and filled up the hot tub. Obviously, I couldn't enjoy it fully, but I did get to stick my feet in by the vents, which was great.

This morning, we got ready and went down to the restaurant for our included breakfast. Again, the food was incredible. We put our bags in storage and took a leisurely stroll through town to the bayfront for a horse carriage tour of the city. We had a great tour guide - she was witty and very well-versed in some of the low-down secrets of St. Augustine. It was very cool, and definitely piqued my interest about Henry Flagler and how the city really got going. Something to check out at the bookstore. After visiting all the sites, we wandered the shops again, and then headed north on AIA.

We had gotten great recommendations for a little place on the intercoastal called Cap's, so we headed there. It didn't look like much from the parking lot, but what a treasure! We spent almost two hours, watching the water (we saw dolphins swimming!), enjoying each other's company, and having a nice, long lunch. I got a little sunburned, despite the shade from the tree, but other than that, it was just a perfect few days.

Oh, and even better? We got home to find the approval for our fence in the mail. The company came out today to finalize everything and it will be up next week!

Double Feature Review: Sweeney Todd & Juno

Saturday, April 19, 2008

Since I stayed home sick last night, I got a chance to catch up on some movies I've been wanting to see.

Sweeney Todd
Considering my love for Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter and Tim Burton, it was only natural that I would want to see this movie. I bought it the day it came out (a Teusday, two weeks ago), watched the first half of it this week, and the end of it last night.

True to Burton's form, it was gray, dark and campy (I swear the blood was tomato juice, and no effort to conceal that was made). I really wasn't a huge fan of the music, but I would have to see a broadway version before I write the whole soundtrack off - in the context of the movie, it seemed rather rushed and silly. Although, Depp's voice was fantastic once he got going.

Carter was creepy, as always (I would love to know what she's like in real life - I wonder if she wears a lot of pink and such). Alan Rickman was about as slimy as he was when he played the Sheriff of Nottingham in Prince of Thieves. He's good at the slimy.

It took a while to get into it (hence the watching in two parts), but I would see it again. I mean, after all, it's Jack Spar... I mean, Johnny Depp. :)

Juno
What can I say? I loved it. It was the perfect cross between Napoleon Dynamite and Saved - irreverant, honest, at times lol funny.

The dialogue is smart and quick. JK Simmons is hysterical as Juno's father and Jason Bateman is touching in the role of the potential adoptive father (married to a robotically perfect Jennifer Garner, who is absolutely believable in her custard/cheesecake dilemma).
See it. That's all I can say. Obviously, teen pregnancy is nothing to be taken lightly, but the way Juno is handled is actually very smart and responsible. Enjoy!

My version of pregnancy mythbusters

Friday, April 18, 2008

I get lots of questions from non-pregnant friends, and it's really made it clear how scary pregnancy can seem. Personally, I had to give up reading a lot of books because of how nervous they made me (wait, wait... I'm going to leak WHAT from WHERE???) and I really didn't want to spend these months in terror of symptoms that may or may not happen. I figured that since I'm sick on the couch, I might as well address some of the questions and "myths" of my personal experience.

Morning Sickness.

"They" say you forget. "They" say not everyone gets it. "They" were clearly not laying on the bathroom floor with me for almost two straight months, propped between the toilet and shower, wondering how this earth could possibly be overpopulated if this nonstop hell was even a possible symptom of pregnancy. I have not forgotten. I doubt after Turtle comes that I will forget. I consider myself a tough cookie, but that was too much, even for me.

How to deal? Just keep on eating and drinking. I kept crackers on my nightstand and got something in my stomach the second I woke up in the morning. I carried plastic bags and towels in the car, and I always travelled with snacks. I still got sick, but keeping something in my stomach really seemed to help. It wasn't fun, but I got through it.

Restrictions on Foods & Drinks

This falls into the category of do what you're comfortable doing. For example, the only food I've avoided has been sushi. Granted, I usually do a shrimp tempura roll, but the cross-contamination risks frighten me. I'm extremely particular about my sushi, and this is where my comfort level puts me. I will be looking for a good sushi place in June, though.

Deli meat? I've eaten it, freshly sliced from reputable places. Soft cheeses? 99% of imported cheese is pasteurized, so I'm usually fine. I prefer to be able to check the label but I've had feta in my Panera Greek salads, and bleu and brie at home. We are going to a restaurant that serves a lot of goat cheese on Thursday, and I don't think I'll be able to resist. Fish? I've eaten salmon, shrimp and tuna, always well cleaned and well cooked, and try to limit it to once a week. Caffeine? I'm comfortable with a little tea (iced or hot), chocolate, and even the occasional coke or frappacino. My doctors all said it was fine, and I am not concerned about my intake. Alcohol? While I can smell a good pinot noir being poured at 50 paces, I've been good. My doctors are alright with a small glass of red wine here and there, so again, do what makes you comfortable.

Ask your doctor if you have any more specific questions.

Body changes & weight gain.

I admit, this did surprise me. I thought I would be in hysterics as I ballooned, stuffing my face and packing on pounds. Well, here's a funny thing. As baby grows, he apparently takes up room inside your body, pressing on your stomach and lungs, most significantly. I can barely get through a snack without feeling stuffed. At 35.5 weeks, I've gained 25 pounds, and it is all in my belly. I did have to buy some new bras early on (went from a 36C to a 38D), but I was able to stay out of maternity pants until about week 30. I can still technically fit in my regular jeans with a bella band, but it's not that comfortable, so I bought a few pairs of maternity jeans for the final weeks. As I get down to my final weeks, I've been extremely conscious of my sodium intake, to avoid any water retention. So far, my plan is working. I'm actually really looking forward to having my maternity pictures taken at the end of the month - it's the first time in my life when I think I'll be comfortable showing off my belly.

Hormones.

Yes. They are there. They act up. DH takes pride in bragging that I've been very low-maintenance and even-keeled through my pregnancy. I've cried a few times. I've flipped out once or twice. I may even have (gasp) overreacted to a thing or two that he's said. But I've really tried to keep my hormones in check. Getting upset only puts strain on my body and isn't healthy. A few times, I've gotten frustrated with situations I just can't take, but it all passes. And he's been a very supportive and wonderful husband, which makes it easier to stay rational. :)

How to deal? Avoid Publix holiday commercials and any shows like Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.

Tell me what no one tells you.

I could write a book on that alone! First, everyone is different. What works for me may not work for others. My experiences are not everyone's experiences. Save my morning sickness time, I've had it easy. I've stayed in good health (no gestational diabetes, low blood pressure, excellent rate of weight gain), and Turtle has been growing well, with strong heartbeat and great activity. My biggest "problem" is that I feel limited in what I can do. I have a hard time breathing with him pressing on my lungs and I get worn out so easily. I hate that feeling.

On the plus side, my nails and hair have never been healthier. I'm eating better than I normally would.

As far as my "evil symptoms'?

Round Ligament Pain: This is going to feel like you are being stabbed in your pelvic area. I assure you, it's perfectly normal. Although I did tell the doctor that I believe Round Ligament Pain is a term that was invented to cover all manner of unidentifiable pregnancy complaints just to make it easier, and he didn't deny it, so... It goes away, never fear. It's just your ligament stretching as your uterus grows.
Sciatic Nerve Pain: This is a later one (for me, started at 35 weeks). It's really just sort of like a nerve pinch up high in my leg or butt, that makes me leg a little weak for a minute. Really fun when I've just put weight on that particular leg.
Bodily Functions: Despite the fact that pregnancy is a "womanly condition," there is nothing feminine or
delicate about it. Gas and constipation are among the fun things your body will throw your way. Most pre-natal vitamins boast a stool softener, which I recommend.
Fatigue: Naps are my friend. That is all.

Other things I've heard of: leaking breasts, hair growth in abnormal places (namely the abdomen), elevated blood pressure, migraines.

My conclusion
Pregnancy is what you make of it. Everyone has a different view of what it should be like, and everyone handles it differently. Some women would spend the rest of their lives being pregnant; some people never want to do it again. There is no right or wrong. For me, the most important thing is do what makes you comfortable. Be comfortable with your doctors or midwives; be comfortable with your hospital or birthing center; be comfortable with the choices you and your partner have made for your child. Set your goals and stick to them, no matter what others say. Keep informed and research your decisions, and don't second guess yourselves.

My goal is to safely deliver a healthy son in a few weeks. I am going to try for a natural childbirth, but I'm also going to go in with the attitude of "hope for the best but expect the worst." For once in my life (please note: I'm as Type A as they come), I realize that flexibility is important, because I have no idea how things are going to go, and I need to be able to roll with the punches, should the punches arise. DH is on board with this approach. We have discussed the way we would like things to happen, and we both know to be open if things don't happen quite the way we expect.

And finally, and most important, take care of yourself and your baby. :)

A little football

Thursday, April 17, 2008

The NFL football schedule is out, at long last. I'm thrilled because I missed soooo much live football last season with my morning sickness.

The Dolphins open up and close against the Jets. Blah. They also have a super early bye week again, which is never a good thing for them. I know it will be a major rebuilding year for the Fins, but maybe with Bill Parcells there, they will turn it around a little bit. Of course, nothing would make me happier than seeing the Jets fail worse than last year, but let's not focus on that.

The Jags have a good schedule too. The Packers and the Colts will both be playing here. Obviously, the Packers won't be the same without Favre, but I would really love to see the Colts in person. I'm sure that it will be a tough ticket, but we'll see what we can do.

Actually, the Fins will be up here to play the Jags in preseason. I usually don't do preseason games, but would like to see my team in action. I'll have to see if I'm up to it.
While I like baseball and hockey, it'll be good to get out of this spring slump and back to the NFL/NCAA.

A little culture

Last night, we headed over to Pauly's to DH's buddy, Matt Collins, play. It was kind of a slow night, so he was able to hang out and chat with us for a little bit, which is nice. He's a great acoustic talent, and does a mix of covers and originals. He's working on a new CD, and even played one of the more complete tracks from it - of course, it will be totally different by the time he goes to press, but it was cool to hear a work in progress.

Oh, and the pizza was great, as usual. DH just finished off the leftovers for lunch.

Doctor's Appointment: 35.5 Weeks

Wednesday, April 16, 2008

I had Dr. V again (he's one of my favorites).

Today's visit involved my Group B Strep test and a hemoglobin test. Fun times.

So, here's the rundown:
* Weight: I gained 1 pound since last appointment (total gain of 25 pounds)
* BP: 114/70 (higher than my usual but still nice & low)
* Iron: up to 10.5 (that's the low end of normal, so I have to take some more iron, but it's up from 9.8)
* Post-breakfast glucose: 124 (they keep testing because I'm having traces of sugar in my urine, but nothing to worry about)
* Measuring: 35.5 cm and about 5.5 pounds - perfect
* Turtle's heartrate: strong
* Position: and I quote "head down and low"

I go back on May 1 and then I'm on weekly appointments. Dr. V says everything is "perfect", my favorite word, and to just keep up what I'm doing. Peachy keen!

Childbirth Class: Check

Tuesday, April 15, 2008

DH and I finished our final childbirth class last night. We really enjoyed it. Last night we covered emergency c-sections, postpartum care and breastfeeding. It was pretty informative, and I'm glad we went (I was kind of being lazy and was really tempted to sit on the couch.

Turtle was pretty active throughout class, which made it hard to concentrate, but an active baby is a healthy baby.

As you know, Monday night is also Dancing With the Stars night. I've missed it the last few weeks due to class, and I haven't been able to vote, but it seems my top pick, Mr. Jason Taylor, is still going strong! I forgot to DVR it last night, but as luck would have it, Jason was the last dancer! His rumba was beautiful. The website was too busy to vote, but I take that to mean people were voting for him. Hopefully, his points will be high enough to keep him another week.

Nursery finished at 35 weeks!

Sunday, April 13, 2008

It's official: Turtle's room is complete!

Ok, I have two more 8x10 frames to decoupage, but I have until the end of the month to get that done. ;)
We're both really happy with the end result. I think it's going to be a great room for our little one.

Recipe: Banana Bread

My neighbor, S, wanted to make some goodies for another neighbor across the street who just had a premie soon after they moved in. I just happened to have some bananas hanging out (the remnants of a forgotten craving), so it worked out perfectly.

1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 large eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened

1 cup sugar
3 ripe bananas, mashed
3/4 cup crushed walnuts

Preheat oven to 350 and prepare a standard loaf pan with cooking spray.

Combine flour, baking soda, and salt in a bowl and set aside.

Beat eggs and vanilla together in a small bowl and set aside.

Use a mixer to cream the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy. Slowly pour the egg mixture into the butter while mixing until incorporated. Add the bananas.

Mix in the flour mixture with a wooden spoon until just moistened. Fold in the nuts and transfer the batter to the prepared pan. Bake
for 55 minutes to an hour. Cool in the pan for an hour, then flip out and cool on a wire rack or serving platter.

Errand Saturday

Saturday, April 12, 2008

Whoo-hoo! I actually love running weekend errands. It's a sickness.

We headed over to BRU, quickly becoming our new staple store (ha ha, Target, just kidding!), because DH wanted to get our stroller and changing pad for Turtle's dresser. He was adamant about test driving the stroller, and then making sure that it was good for me, too (um, honey, what do you think I was doing when I went to the store and registered for it?), and fortunately, he gave it two thumbs up.

I was able to get a few more open-bottom gowns, since they've been hard to find, and then DH asked for the millionth time if I had registered for one of those Baby Bjorn carriers. I'm getting the impression he might want one. I also asked him about his own diaper bag. Apparently, he is of the misguided opinion that he will just carry the Coach. Excuse me while I laugh hysterically. So I registered for a cool looking backpack for him to use, as well as a carrier for him and a sling for me. He'll like that.

Then it was off to Home Depot where we got a fan and floor lamp for Turtle's room and a garage door opener. I'm hoping our neighbor knows how to install them so he can help out. I ziptied the Canes mobile to Turtle's crib, hung up the decoupaged wall circles, put the lamp together, and now I'm tucked up in bed with Miss Molly, watching Clash of the Titans, while he and the boy puggers watch the Yankees.

Oh, did I mention? There was ColdStone. :)

Looking forward to a quiet weekend.

Thursday, April 10, 2008

I'll be honest. I'm exhausted. I would love to be able to just go to sleep, but Turtle is kicking up a storm in there, so I might as well update the blog while he's active.

We had houseguests from Friday through Wednesday, I haven't been sleeping and I went out for a girl's dinner at Cheesecake Factory tonight. I really hope I can sleep in a bit tomorrow, and get some napping in. CF was fun. What's better than 14 friends, 3 excellent little babies and lots of good food?

Last night was a bit stressful. I started having some BH contractions, and I'm realizing that Turtle could be coming any day now. Wow. It really seems like yesterday that I was laying on the bathroom floor, nauseous and miserable. We have a few more things to pick up for my hospital bag, I confirmed our pediatrician today and DH wants me to give him a list of the foods and drinks I think I might want for early labor (our instructor said that he, as labor coach, will be responsible for keeping me fed and watered, and he takes that task quite seriously).

He also asked me this morning if I am scared. Hmmm. You know, I'm not scared of labor. I'm scared of not knowing when it's going to start and I'm terrified of a potential episiotomy (silly, I know). Other than that, I'm anxious. I want to see our baby and make sure everything is ok. We opted out of the quad screen thinking that any unusual results would leave us in trauma through the rest of the pregnancy, but now I'm terrified that something might be wrong. Just my hyperactive imagination at work, I'm sure.

We're going to hang close to home this weekend. He wants to go pick up the stroller and some other "necessary" items, and then I think we're going to look at garage door openers. Hurrah for Home Depot. All I'll need is to get a soft-serve ice cream sundae, and it will be a perfect weekend. :)

What a Weekend!

Sunday, April 6, 2008

I am absolutely wiped out.

On Friday night, our good friends A & W made the trip up from South Florida to stay with us/look for apartments. We had conspired with W to have a small baby shower for A (when we thought her mom's plans for a shower for her had fallen through), and aso to throw W a little 30th birthday party.

It was so good seeing them. We hope they had as good a time as we did. They left today after breakfast and a trip to the Carter's outlet (clearly my new favorite store).

Tomorrow afternoon, one of my best friends N will be driving up to visit us for a few days. The best part? We are test driving a maid service tomorrow so I don't have to clean a thing. I did have to do three loads of laundry, but that's ok. At least Turtle's wardrobe is completely washed and hung.

The baby made me do it!

Thursday, April 3, 2008

Apparently, according to my husband (the Fun Burglar), I've been both combative and evasive about the subject of a diaper bag. He claims that any time he brings it up, that I refuse to look at them, or change the topic. He asked me today if I was just waiting for him to buy me one, and I told him that I did register for the Graco Deco one at BRU, but just really hadn't... gotten there.

Truth is, I had been drooling over a particular Coach bag, but just could not justify the price tag. I had a 20% off coupon for the regular store, but I let it expire, in the hopes that I would get over it. In the meantime, I have glanced at others, but none of them have really grabbed me.

So tonight, when he went to the Jax Suns game, I decided to go to the outlets. I had a gift card to Carter's and the Coach factory outlet is just a few stores down.

I don't know what happened. The practical side of my brain seriously just shut down. I'm not even a purse person! I carry the same black Coach bag for a few years and then replace it. Sometimes I'll pick up a few fun purses from Target, but that's rare.

The only thing I can say in my defense is that my total savings was 47%. And I'm not going to buy a new bag for a really, really, really, really, really long time.

33 Weeks, 4 Days.

Wednesday, April 2, 2008

Things are moving along. I had my appointment on Tuesday and all was well. I am up a total of 24 pounds, my blood pressure is good (although a little on the low side, so I have to watch that), and Turtle is measuring at 33.5 cm and about 4 pounds. Even better? All that slithering around he was doing the other day was him flipping to head-down position.

Dr. P said to hold on for three more weeks and then we'll be home free. Unfortunately, I've been more uncomfortable the last few days than I've thought possible. I'm waking up about every 40 minutes. I can't nap. It's harder to breathe than ever, and my appetite is even more nonexistent than before. DH is living up to his Fun Burglar title and really riding me about my intake of liquids and foods. I know it's for my own good, but grrrr.

I go back to the doctor in two weeks for my Strep B and hemoglobin tests. Those don't sound like lots of fun, and after that it's down to one week appointments. Ack.

The carseat was installed today. The installer was great, very patient and thorough. It didn' t seem that hard, although it's weird having it in DH's car. It won't fit in mine, so he's the sole baby transporter. It's just another thing checked off the list!

Turtle's bag is packed for the hospital. I'm working on mine. DH is on his own for packing. :)

For Turtle:
* 2 sleep gowns
* 3 receiving blankets
* 2 pacis (which I probably don't need but they're small, so what the heck?)
* coming home outfit with matching cap
* 2 caps
* booties
