Ah, technology. Isn't it the best?

Says the mom who can't figure out what all the @ and # mean on Twitter.

So I decided to get the Tag Junior system for Turtle.

I was kind of opposed at first. I mean, we read. A lot. We sit with books and spend lots of storytime together. So, why would we need a weird little computerized knobby-looking thing to read to him?

The answer to that pressing question came last week, when Turtle started hoarding all his books and refused to let us touch them. He wanted to turn the pages and "read" all by himself.

I just wish he had come to this conclusion at the holidays, when Target was offering that sick deal on the damn things.

Meet the newest member of the Cane Family.

The package includes the Tag Junior knobby thing, a sample book and a USB cable. You need to provide the internet connection and some AAA batteries.

Yes, you read that right. A USB cable.

Much like the iPhone, Tag Junior has to sync.

::blink blink::

I opted to tackle this project after Turtle went to bed. It's bad enough trying to unscrew those awful little battery panels, while you child is dancing around your knees, near tears because it's taking too long to get his chubby little hands on his new toy.

This was a process.

You know, because first, you have to download the Tag Junior software into your computer. And then you need to register, so that Leapfrog and Tag Junior can send you informational emails on your child's progress (THIS week, Turtle managed not to stick Tag Junior in his mouth more than three times! He's doing SWELL!).

And then you have to set it up so it says your child's name (Don't worry! If you kid has a super you-neek name that isn't on Leapfrog's current, comprehensive List O'Names, just shoot them an email. They'll take your name into consideration! Joy!) by way of greeting and farewell. "Hello, Turtle! Let's read!"

And then you have to download the information for your corresponding Tag Junior books. Each Tag Junior system can hold up to five books, so I guess you just have to switch the info in and out as necessary.

I go slow, so we have the sample book and one other that I purchased.

And Turtle is in lurve.

He's just chillin' with his monkey, "reading" his new books. All he has to do is place the Tag Junior on the page. If it scans words, then it will "read" the words to him. If it scans a picture, it will identify the graphic, or play some music or something similar. Very interactive.

Life is good.

And that's what matters most.

i think i need details....little peanut often pulls all her books out of her bin and then proceeds to flip thru a selection (or chew it)

Turtle is a total book-a-holic. Just like his mommy. His first word? Book-a. True story.

You put the knobby thing on the pictures and words in the book and it will either "read" the words aloud, or say something/play music about the picture. So if peanut wants to be alone with her books, she'll be able to still get the benefit of learning something other than looking at pictures. Or getting her daily dose of fiber ;)

It's genius, really. I don't know why I didn't come up with it.

We LOVE our Tag Jr. Best present Grandma got her for Christmas.

I also love that it taught her to say her own name. <3

I just wish it had a larger memory so we could load all of the books on it at once. 5 isn't enough!!
