Gardening!

Sunday, March 15, 2009

Ah, spring! The sun is shining, the weather is warm... the front garden is dead.

I will have you know I cannot be blamed for that. There were brutal frosts, followed by 70 degree days, followed by more freezes, and really, who can keep up? I did my part by watering and all my rubber trees have survived, has have my basil, parsley and oregano. So it wasn't my fault.

However, I am taking a stand. I am going to plant and maintain our front garden. I hate what was in there - hate with the fire of a thousand suns. I like the roses on the corners, and I liked the mexican heather before it failed me. So we're starting over. More on that below.

Here's a brief Turtle break. Grapefruit = yummy.

And now we come to the grand Home Depot. Turtle was super helpful in guarding Mommy's new project: her pink and green hydrangeas.

Check out those colors!

The deal is, I love hydrangeas. And ever since I saw them as 8' tall "shrubs" in the Hamptons, I have been determined to replicate the look. If they can survive the heat of summer and the cold of winter up there, there is no reason I should not be able to have my own here. Well, unless I kill them.

So to be safe, I planted one in a big pot.

And the other in the ground, to replace one of the gross, branchy things that drops ugly leaves all over. That's it's technical name. Ask for it at any nursery.

And here's Turtle, checking it out.

I'll keep you updated on their progress. They survived the night and that's always the first step. :)

Ohhh how I love hydrangeas! I kill everything that I plant... so I don't even try. :(
Best of luck to you!
