Playdate & Cookie Decorating Fail. Sort of.

Tuesday, October 20, 2009

Today, we had a playdate with my friend M, and her two boys, L and B. B is only two weeks old, so I'm pretty sure he didn't enjoy himself as much as Turtle and L did.

The plan was to bake and decorate cookies, but the boys had other ideas. I'm actually glad. L really engaged Turtle. Usually, he's a little tentative around children, and this is the first time he's actually gotten involved and played WITH someone as opposed to parallel to. I loved it.

Taking a break to pose for the camera.

L, flashing his smile. Such a cutie.

After nap and lunch, we resumed the cookie decorating attempts at home. Turtle was baffled by Mommy's latest creative endeavors. He had no idea what was in store for him.

I had him help me push the Big Pumpkin Cutter (people, this thing is huge) into the dough, and then pull it back out. He totally got it.

Then I showed him how to stare deep into the oven to wait for the cookies to bake.

Then I sent him off to play while the cookies cooled and I got a decorating station set up.

Oh, hai, Mr. Cookie. I will eat you.

I mixed up some royal icing and then also melted down some canned vanilla frosting. I know. The horror. The melted canned seemed to be a little easier for a toddler to manipulate, so we went with that. I added some food coloring and turned it over to Turtle with some spoons.

What. The. Hell. Is. This?

Let me eat you and find out. If there were ever any doubts that this child is mine, this should erase them all. Who needs baked goods mucking up perfectly good frosting?

I intervened at this point to show him how to spread the frosting on the cookie.

And then I showed him how to stick some candy corns and m&ms (halloween colors) into the frosting to make a face. Funny thing, though. No sooner had I stuck a piece of candy to the cookie and turned to grab another, then I heard a giggle and a high-pitched "again!" and turned back to find a piece of candy missing. One of life's mysteries, I guess.

Oh. Or maybe not a mystery. Maybe just Turtle, picking M&M's off a defenseless cookie face.

Cool picture. Monkey was checking it all out.

He totally got orange frosting up his nose. It was that good.

Right back to square one. With more fingerprints.

No, really, Mom. I'm fixing it.

I'm NOT eating more of it. I promise. You believe me, don't you? Don't you, Mommy?

Needless to say, not much dinner was eaten tonight. But we had fun.
