An Evening At The County Fair

Wednesday, October 21, 2009

I'm going to be honest with you. There is absolutely no way to express the level of my love for all things fair/carnival-related. From the rides, to the lights, to the fried food, to the animals, to the games, to the fried food, to the music... Did I mention the food? :)

I had been hoping to hit up the County Fair on Friday evening or Sunday morning, but our schedule got a little tight, and the next thing I knew, DH was suggesting we just throw caution to the wind and go tonight.

Have I mentioned that I love my DH? And fair food?

I was nervous. Turtle did N-O-T get a good nap today. He also got his hair cut and got his little butt dragged to Carter's to exchange a couple of items. He rested, but there was little to no sleeping going on. And we were planning to be out WAY past his regular bedtime of 5/5:30. So really, we were totally flying by the seats of our pants on this.

We arrived.

We pretty much got to the fairgrounds right at 5, so things were just opening up. This lovely gentleman reeled DH right on in, promising he could throw til he won something. I just stood back to watch.

Turtle was totally intrigued.

Fortunately for us (not so fortunately for the lovely gentleman), DH got the ring on the spike in two shots. The gentleman wheedled a bit. For another $2, he would let ME throw til I won. He pointed out all the great prizes we could take home if we really tried, including but not limited to a Playboy clock OR a Heath-Ledger-as-the-Joker clock. Really. Just what's been missing from our living room decor.

I declined, but they insisted.

Even more fortunately, I nailed the ring on the first throw. The poor guy was beside himself, but we made out with two stuffed animals for Turtle. Who was really unimpressed with the whole thing. Even with the Playboy clock.

So with our winnings in tow, we headed off to the livestock exhibit.

I thought this rooster was gorgeous.

DH shows Turtle the horsey

And in good Turtle form, our little PETA activist tried to lean in for a kiss.

This goat didn't give two figs about the safety of me or his fellow volunteering animals. He was chewing on this laminated warning like a crazy man. He was determined to lure some trusting soul into CROSSING OR REACHING OVER THE LINE.

Away from the clutches of the rebel goat was a cow milking demonstration. The cow moo-ed quite loudly, to Turtle's delight.
Checking out those udders.

Readers, let's be clear. DH has never milked a cow. In fact, I'm pretty sure he has actually never been this close to a live cow. And yet, here he is, pointing out the mechanics of milking to our son. Good times.

Turtle was not entirely convinced.

Ah, what the heck?

He has recently learned the word "tractor," so once outside, we posed him in front of this big ol' John Deere.

Just some pretty shots of the rides in the sunset.

Oh, look! I made it into a picture!

We really wanted to catch the frisbee dogs at 7, but Turtle couldn't hang. We ran into some of our neighbors and enjoyed dinner with them, and then we decided to grab some caramel apples for the road. Turtle didn't make it out of the parking lot. The apples didn't make it to Glee.
