HORSIES!!!

Tuesday, February 24, 2009

What a great day.

S asked me to join her on a visit to DIAMONDS IN THE ROUGH FARM, a retired horse farm in our area. What an amazing experience.

From their website:

Founded in 2004, DRFarm is the Ancient City’s first animal welfare organization to address the area’s equine welfare issues. Devoted to providing a life long safe haven for retired equines, our commitments also include:

Rehabilitating animals in need · PMU foal/mare awareness, Providing educational information & materials concerning proper care and handling of horses in an effort to prevent neglect, abuse and abandonment in a rapidly increasing local horse population.

There are few alternatives for aging horses that have been long-time faithful servants to their humans, when the time comes for them to retire. DRF is one of only a handful of organizations nationwide that provides for horses in their final years.

Marie gave us the tour and then let us wander about the grounds for as long as we wanted.

J hangs out with the barn cats.

While Turtle wonders where we are THIS time.

Little J hangs out in his stroller, wondering what all the fuss is about.

And now for the main event. Horses!

Um, Mom? What is THAT???

Nice horsey.

Oh, hai!

Hai, again. You're pretty.

This big boy is one of my favorites. Look at his gorgeous coloring. DRFARM.ORG says of Honey:

Originally bred in Argentina for polo in the early 1990's, this Thoroughbred gelding was brought to the USA in 1999. He competed successfully on the ‘A’ rated Jumping circuit in Wellington, FL for three years before being abandoned in a field. The director of DRF, Marie Matte, cared for him through a bout with Lymes disease (that was originally falsely diagnosed as EPM - a degenerative neurological disease), hyperthyroidism and later a case of intestinal displacement over the spleen. He thankfully came through his maladies successfully and is maintained with a special diet and medicinal supplements. He has been sentinels for Tootsie, the PMU Mustang Paint, from the start.

The best part of my day is that I talked to Marie about volunteering a bit for the organization. I think it's a good fit for us both and it would be a great way to utilize my skills. I have a lot to offer, and hopefully can do some good for these beauties.
